The Five Principles (Gokai)

The Five Principles of Reiki are often shared as simple sayings or inspirational reminders. But within The Reiki Society, they are approached as something much deeper: a lifelong practice of embodiment.

This category explores the Gokai not as ideas to agree with, but as disciplines to live.

Through repeated reflection and daily practice, the principles gradually reveal deeper layers of awareness—shaping how we relate to ourselves, others, and the present moment. What begins as a simple phrase becomes a mirror for emotional patterns, habits of mind, nervous system states, relationships, and the way we move through ordinary life.

Here you’ll find teachings and reflections on:

  • awareness and self-observation
  • emotional regulation
  • discipline and consistency
  • gratitude and presence
  • simplicity and surrender
  • nervous system healing
  • relationships and compassion
  • spiritual embodiment in daily life

Rather than approaching the Gokai as abstract philosophy, this pillar explores what it means to practice them in real situations—in difficulty, in uncertainty, in routine, and in the quiet moments of everyday life.

The deeper purpose of this work is not self-perfection, but returning: returning to today, returning to awareness, and returning to harmony through consistent practice over time.

The Gokai are not separate from Reiki practice. They are the heart of it.
